In a column by Ann Coulter published yesterday, the issue of our media's over-extended one night stand with John McCain. Interesting how McCain was possibly the greatest politician still living and in politics for so many years, but now he's nothing but a Bush-supporting hack. It's almost as if the media has found a new hero. Surely not!
Back before the Republican Party was saddled with John McCain as its nominee, The New York Times called him "the only Republican who promises to end the George Bush style of governing from and on behalf of a small, angry fringe." The paper praised him for "working across the aisle to develop sound bipartisan legislation" and predicted that he would appeal to "a broader range of Americans than the rest of the Republican field."
Saddled with John McCain? Foisted upon us horribly is more like it! Amazing how The New York Times' "small angry fringe" has morphed into nearly half the voters in America. The point Ann's making though is that the Times professed their love and adoration for our little Democrat spy inside the Republican Party every chance they got.
Then something unforeseen happened. Miraculous even! The New Messiah rose from the Senate and poured out His light over America as if He was literally sent from Heaven to save us all from ourselves:
And on MSNBC's "Hardball," from the way Chris Matthews carried on about McCain, you'd think he had caught a glimpse of Obama's ankle. Matthews said that McCain was "the real straight talker ... a profile in courage ... more seasoned than the current president, a patriot, of course ... honest and respected in the media. He has all the pluses in the world of a sort of a, you know, an Audie Murphy, if you will, a real war hero."
I guess the party's over.
Now the Times won't even publish McCain's op-ed. I wouldn't have published it either -- I've read it twice and I still can't remember what it says -- but I also wouldn't have published McCain's seven op-eds in The New York Times since 1996.
Since McCain has gone from being a Republican "maverick" who attacks Republicans and promotes liberal causes to the Republican nominee for president, he's also gone from being one of the Times' most frequent op-ed guest columnists to being an unpublishable illiterate.
Another offensive rebuke from The Times as they were refusing to publish McCain's op-ed was sending his column back and asking for a re-write. After publshing all those columns from McCain over the years it just wasn't good enough without making some additions and adjustments courtesy of The Times' editorial board. Just because McCain wasn't being nice enough to Obama. The New Messiah's now invisible opponent was simply too competitive in his writing to deserve publication.
To John McCain's great credit, he declined to re-write his column thereby appeasing The New York Times and Barack Obama. For that I am eternally grateful because as conservatives know all too well, McCain can often go either way. For once McCain actually stood-up to The Times and behaved like an honest Republican instead of a lying Democrat. Out of all this nonsense, that could be the real story.
As for The Times, how obviously in the tank for Obama can they possibly get? To go so far as to ban Obama's opponent by refusing to publish his response to The New Messiah's op-ed is beyond pathetic. Is Obama so flimsy he cannot allow his only opponent to publish a counter-piece to his brilliant column? There's apparently no reason to ask that question anymore. It's not as if The Times was being asked to publish counter-pieces from Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, and John McCain. This was one lousy op-ed from the nominee who also happens to be the most low-key and liberally tolerant candidate the Republicans had to offer! If Barack Obama had an ounce of character he would have publicly demanded The Times not discriminate against John McCain and condemn their refusal to publish.
Looking on the bright side, John McCain's opposing column could have quite possibly embarrassed conservatives. So in the end The Times might have done us all a favor. McCain already spends way too much time admiring and complimenting Obama as it is. The last thing we need is McCain gushing over Obama in The New York Times, and in doing so encouraging voters to support his opponent by default. The entire mainstream media, with the slight exception of FoxNews, publicly supports Barack Obama. They don't need any help from John McCain.
Funny how the one time a newspaper decides not to publish some lunatic liberal's column slamming conservatives, it also happens to be the one time they have a full-blown Communist to support for President. This was the one time conservatives had even the slightest chance of a New York Times op-ed by John McCain helping our cause instead of attacking it.
