Barack Obama wrote an op-ed piece in the New York Times on Monday outlining his well thought-out plan for withdrawal from Iraq. After reading the entire column, a grueling five minutes of my life that I will never get back, one thing became very clear. Obama's plan for Iraq is already ocurring!
President Bush is already preparing to withdraw significant numbers of soldiers from Iraq, and he isn't taking two years like the Obama plan calls for. Obama's plan calls for a large portion of the troops in Iraq to be redeployed to Afghanistan in order to combat the increasing threat of the Taliban and al-Qaeda pouring over the Afghan-Pakistan border. That's funny. President Bush is doing the same thing, but in 45-days! Again, a great deal sooner than Obama's two years.
In all of Obama's brilliance and divine splendor he seems to have missed something. By all credible accounts we have achieved victory in Iraq. I guess Barack didn't get the memo. Our soldiers have made historical progress in removing Saddam Hussein along with his 550 tons of yellow-cake uranium, and have given the Iraqis the ability to manage their own destinies through the democratic election of what is now a solid government with its own military and police forces. Is it absolutely perfect like the Democrats are demanding while all along calling for retreat? No; and neither is our own country. It is however exactly what we set out to accomplish. Maybe if Barack Obama got his news from sources running missions with our soldiers on the ground in Iraq instead of The New Republic, DailyKos, the Huffington Post, and the New York Times he would know the facts instead of making them up as he goes along.
Everything Obama wants to do concerning Iraq has either already happened or is now happening on a much shorter timetable. So where is the great revelation from The New Messiah in his New York Times op-ed piece? There isn't one. The mission in Iraq will not be completed until Obama says it's completed and not one second before.
One thing I should admit: I completely agree with Obama on moving more soldiers into Afghanistan. Apparently so does President Bush and General Petraeus. Versus waiting on Obama to shine down the light of Heaven and give his permission; President Bush is going to go ahead and do it without Obama's inspired intervention. Which, by the way, has been the plan all along! All Barack Obama did is re-word the current plan for Iraq into a nice little package his adoring throngs are able to swallow without choking on how wrong they have been about Iraq since the start of the war.
