More than 100 Taliban terrorists attacked the small U.S. outpost in Wanat, breaching the walls and allowing them to assault our soldiers from the inside. Our soldiers mounted a counter-attack killing 40 of the enemy. The report states the fighting lasted most of the day. Initially outnumbered and attacked from all sides, and our soldiers still killed at least 40 Taliban and repelled the now failed assault.
The report also cites U.S. leaders considering the draw-down of soldiers in Iraq for redeployment to Afghanistan; upwards of 10,000. It appears we need those extra soldiers in Afghanistan now more than ever. The Taliban attacks are becoming more frequent and better coordinated.
I will call for it until it is done. The border between Afghanistan and Pakistan needs to be secured by whatever means necessary. As long as the Taliban and al-Qaeda are allowed to go back and forth into Pakistan, with the Pakistani government signing peace treaties and giving them safe haven, this will continue. A much larger U.S. presence is needed in Afghanistan immediately, regardless of where the soldiers are transferred from. It is apparent that Pakistan cannot and will not fight the Taliban within their own country.
